The first time I set foot into the Black Temple was in August of 2008, a few months before the big 30% nerf for the WotLK 3.0.1 prepatch in October of the same year. We didn’t clear the raid, but it was quite exciting and even if it wasn’t current endgame anymore, it was a real challenge for the whole raid.
The fashion of soloing raids wasn’t really a thing back then, not like it is today. An ill prepared raid of lvl 70 characters could still very VERY easily wipe in lvl 60 raids like AQ40 or Naxx. Soloing raids was made more difficult by the fact that you couldn’t enter them solo, so you needed a friend or second account so you could make a raid group.
In the older expansions the power creep wasn’t that huge as well, so the Black Temple wasn’t soloable at level 80 and even at level 85 depending on the class and your gear, it was impossible to get past the first boss. Later bosses were also impossible for other classes.
I didn’t get to solo BT on my Rogue until level 90 and even then it took a while until I got enough gear to pass the DPS check on the first boss. I slowly improved my gear and checked regularly if I could kill him. Later bosses weren’t pushovers either. The Essence of Desire at the Reliquary of Souls fight was very tricky and Illidan as well as other bosses killed me regularly as well.
At first my goal was just to farm reputation and get a couple of Leatherworking recipe drops and the item I originally wanted from Illidan was the Cursed Vision for transmog. So I started running BT pretty late, also because I was working on another challenge at the time: I tried to max out the back then blue heroic 5-man gear, getting the best possible items with the best stats and upgrading everything. So instead of raiding and getting actual gear that would help me clear the Black Temple, I was grinding 5mans.
But I actually got pretty lucky and on one of my very first runs the Warglaive of Azzinoth main hand weapon dropped. “Sweet!” I thought to myself. “Maybe I can farm both of them.”
The Warglaives have a 5% drop chance each, so with 1 run per week and already owning half the set, I figured with a little bit of luck, it wouldn’t take too long. 5-7 months tops. But remembering my 142 Baron Rivendare runs (after the drop change to 1%), I already had my doubts.
Oh what a fool I was. I didn’t run Black Temple every week, of course. Sometimes motivation was low, sometimes I forgot or didn’t have time, sometimes my account wasn’t active or a new expansion made me not care about anything else.
In 2012 I did my first full clear solo and duo run of the Black Temple.
I had my first Main Hand drop on January the 19th, 2013.
On August 28th, 2013 I thought I was lucky as I saw the legendary item in the loot…alas, it was another main hand. But this was early on in the quest, so I didn’t mind and laughed it off. This was only my 8th run, so I thought “Damn, two drops in 8 runs? This is going to be easy!”.
One week (I think) later I couldn’t believe my eyes as I got another Main Hand. I didn’t even bother to take a screenshot, because it was so ridiculous. “Wow, these things drop like free candy! Three drops in 9 runs and two of them in a row? The off hand must be right around the corner…” Or so I thought…
By the way: On September 18th I got my first Cursed Vision of Sargeras drop, the item I was originally after. Before I had that, I already had gotten three Warglaive Main Hand drops.
October 17th, 2013, my heart started racing and again I was disappointed by another Main Hand! Already this was getting ridiculous! FOUR? But the off hand must be right around the corner (again), surely the challenge wouldn’t go on into the next year.
There was a longer drought in drops, but on June 3rd 2015 I thought my quest to be over, but I was already on to the loot gods joke and of course I wasn’t surprised when I found the fifth unlootable main hand before my eyes.
Fast forward to February 2nd 2016. I had quit the game for a couple of months but returned to prepare for the next expansion and start a bunch of new projects that seemed very interesting. Meanwhile I was resuming my Black Temple runs and only a few weeks after reactivating my account, I was greeted by my SIXTH main hand drop. SIX? Are you KIDDING me? At that point I had already clocked in 58 Black Temple runs. That’s over a year of weekly runs and the 5% drop chance for the off hand felt a little bit like a mocking joke to me.
But then…last month…May 8th of 2016, at long last! The long awaited…wait…is that ANOTHER main hand? At that point I didn’t even remember exactly how many I’ve gotten and I wasn’t even mad anymore. I had accepted the fate that my account seemed to be bugged with a 10% Main and 0% Off Hand drop chance.
But today, the long wait was over. I didn’t even pay attention to any of the fights and was tabbed out most of the time, also on Illidan. And when I looted and saw the eight Warglaive I wasn’t even surprised anymore….until I hovered over the tooltip. Could it be? Does it say…”OFF Hand?” Wait…which one am I missing? The Main Hand? No…I got that one before…holy crap I can loot it!
And thus I finally got my worthless Twin Blades of Azzinoth complete.
From January 2013 until June 2016 in a total of 76 runs I got seven main hands and at last one off hand.
When I started farming the Warglaives, it was really slow for a number of reasons. Another one being, that I was actually farming the items for Thunderfury. In the end, I completed Thunderfury LONG before the Warglaives. The 30-something Ragnaros Kills to get the Bindings (4% drop chance each) seem so low now, compared to Illidan. Oh and I also completed the Fangs of the Father legendary, the Pandaria legendary cloak and the Warlords of Draenor legendary ring before I got my Warglaives. Luckily except for Thori’dal, which I want to get with a Hunter, the remaining legendary items are all pretty reliably farmable. Except for Atiesh. Fuck you Blizzard for removing lvl60 Naxxramas. It’s been almost 8 years and I still haven’t forgotten or forgiven you.
Aaaanyway, that was the long and pointless story of my Warglaives. Next month will be the Legion Prepatch and the expansion follows soon after that. With Demon Hunters being the new class, Warglaives will be even more prominent and even less people will care about the old ones…actually even now nobody cares anymore, because everybody and their mother has a pair of Warglaives. I always die a little bit when I see players sporting both items with less than 10 kills in the log. But I’m not mad…I’m used to it. My 142 Baron Rivendare kills were slightly overshadowed by my friends 7 until we got the mount.
See you next time for an update about the Dungeon Duo or my leveling project!
